What Moguls Watch: A Prophet

I’m a fan of movies…not always the movies everyone else likes. I love IFC, Sundance, and I don’t mind reading subtitles. The other night I ran across the 2010 film, A Prophet. The film is a crime drama that follows a young man on his journey from surviving in prison, to striving in the outside world.

Condemned to six years in prison, Malik El Djebena, part Arab, part Corsican, cannot read or write. Arriving at the jail entirely alone, he appears younger and more fragile than the other convicts. He is 19 years old. Cornered by the leader of the Corsican gang currently ruling the prison, he is given a number of “missions” to carry out, toughening him up and gaining the gang leader’s confidence in the process. Malik is a fast learner and rises up the prison ranks, all the while secretly devising his own plans.

It’s The Attack of Blake Griffin

Blake Griffin is a fool. And he demonstrated that for us night after night throughout the 2010-11 NBA season. However, is a dunk still a dunk if Danny P isn’t watching? Well unfortunately I wasn’t watching. I became one of those fans who doesn’t watch basketball until after the Super Bowl, so I missed a few highlights. However, someone did us a cool and compiled all of Griffin’s killer dunks into one video!!! Now that is looking out. With all of the hype he received I would have expected this video to last about 2 weeks, but at 4 minutes it still packs enough hype to get you through the day!

What Moguls Watch…”Biutiful”

If your taste in movies often travels off the beaten path then you may be interested in this. The new movie Biutiful is receiving tremendous acclaim. It’s from the same director as the films Babel and 21 Grams. It is scheduled for limited release on December 29, 2010. I’ve included the synopsis and the trailer:

A love story between a father and his children. This is the journey of Uxbal, a conflicted man who struggles to reconcile fatherhood, love, spirituality, crime, guilt and mortality amidst the dangerous underworld of modern Barcelona. His livelihood is earned out-of-bounds, his sacrifices for his children know no bounds. Like life itself, this is a circular tale that ends where it begins. As fate encircles him and thresholds are crossed, a dim, redemptive road brightens, illuminating the inheritances bestowed from father to child, and the paternal guiding hand that navigates life’s corridors, whether bright, bad – or biutiful.
